About Ben Rifkin

Previously provost and vice president for educational affairs at Ithaca College, Benjamin Rifkin now serves as a professor of modern languages and literatures at the same institution. Before earning his doctoral degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Ben Rifkin worked in Moscow at Progress Publishers as a translator and at the NBC News Moscow Bureau as an interpreter and office manager. After completing his doctoral degree, Ben Rifkin worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, starting as an assistant professor in 1990, earning tenure and promotion to the rank of professor and serving as department chair. He then worked at Temple University, serving as the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Affairs at the College of Liberal Arts, and then at The College of New Jersey, as Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Ben Rifkin also served as director of the School of Russian at Middlebury College.

In addition to fulfilling his academic responsibilities in teaching, and scholarship, Prof. Rifkin has also demonstrated leadership in higher education in a wide range of areas. He has extensive experience in hiring and mentoring faculty, in reviewing faculty for tenure and promotion, developing and enhancing academic programs, assessing student learning outcomes, managing budgets, and strategic planning; he has also collaborated closely with his institution's advancement officers in the areas of donor relations and the stewarding of gifts.

Prof. Benjamin Rifkin has published over two dozen refereed journal articles, several book chapters, and is the author or co-author of three textbooks; he was also the leader of the RAILS project to teach advanced-level listening comprehension through web-based modules at UW-Madison. Rifkin presents his work at conferences and invited lectures and workshops. Prof. Rifkin has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including Middlebury College’s Lilian Stroebe Medal for global citizenship and advocacy for the study of languages and culture and AATSEEL (American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages) for his RAILS project and for an edited volume on the teaching of Slavic languages and cultures. He was also awarded the highest award for teaching granted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and recognized by UW's College of Letters and Science for excellence in advising.
